The Man from the Earth (2007)
The Man From Earth concerns Professor John Oldman, a scientist who summons a group of associates to a cabin one freezing night, and strikes them with a fantastic revelation: he is not a traditional human, but a 14,000 year-old immortal, who has survived centuries of evolution from the Cro-Magnon Era to the present. In the hours to follow, Professor Oldman’s earth-shaking assertion about himself challenges the men on spiritual, scientific and historical levels. But the most incredible is yet to come - an even more astonishing truth in which the men’s discussions culminate.
This heady dose of cerebral fantasy was scripted by the late Jerome Bixby, who wrote Fantastic Voyage, four classic Star Trek episodes and one unforgettable Twilight Zone episode. Man From Earth’s plot concerns a farewell party for a college professor during which he reveals to his colleagues that he is an immortal who is more than 14,000 years old. The premise seems dubious, but it is skillfully carried off, with the film structured like a theater piece in which the small cast of characters probes all the historical, emotional and religious aspects of the notion of immortality.
